There are six subjects taught at the Department of Pharmacognosy: Pharmacognosy, Biotechnology, Technology of Natural Drugs, Ecology for Pharmacists, Monitoring of the Environment, and Phytotherapy (Phytotherapy is guaranteed together with the Department of Pharmaceutical Botany and Ecology).
Research is focused on the study of therapeuticallysignifi cant substances of natural origin (higher plants) with a special attention to their identifi cation and factors infl uencing their biosynthesis. For these purposes, cultures in vitro derived from relevant intact plants are used. Department employees are routinely able to derive callus and suspensison cultures from relevant plants, optimize cultivation conditions, and study the factors which have infl uence on the biosynthesis (for example precursors, elicitors, organogenesis). As regards other research themes, studies on antioxidant activity of individual substances of natural origin, drug extracts, etc. as well as those on the stability and standardization of natural drugs are carried out.
