Australian National Botanic Gardens

The Australian National Botanic Gardens, on the lower slopes of Black Mountain in Canberra, has the world’s most comprehensive display of living Australian native plants. A place for recreation, inspiration, science and learning.

The Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research (CANBR) includes the Australian National Herbarium. These are jointly managed by CSIRO and the Director of National Parks with strong links to the Australian National Botanic Gardens. The Herbarium, with over 1.2 million specimens, is responsible for the scientific integrity of the Gardens’ plant labeling and manages the national plant name lists for Australia’s botanical community.

One single database, the Integrated Botanical Information System (IBIS), is used for all these activities. This allows linking of names, photographs, herbarium specimens and living plants.

Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine is one of the great herbal systems of the world, with an unbroken tradition going back to the 3rd century BC.
Yet throughout its history it has continually developed in response to changing clinical conditions, and has been sustained by research into every aspect of its use. This process continues today with the development of modern medical diagnostic techniques and knowledge.
Because of its systematic approach and clinical effectiveness it has for centuries had a very great influence on the theory and practice of medicine in the East, and more recently has grown rapidly in popularity in the West. It still forms a major part of healthcare provision in China, and is provided in state hospitals alongside western medicine. Chinese medicine includes all oriental traditions emerging from Southeast Asia that have their origins in China. (more…)

Whether the plants are native to a specific area, acquired or even newly introduced Herb Society members are enthusiastic about learning and sharing information about them. If you ask an Herb Society member about the vanilla bean, they may ask if you are referring to the Tahitian, Madagascan, or Mexican variety. If discussing rosemary, a member might ask how many varieties you grow and recommend one best for culinary use.

The Alternative Medicine Foundation

These resources relate mainly to Western traditions of herbal medicine (also referred to as phytomedicine, herbal medicine or botanical medicine) that rely primarily on the use of single herbs. Other traditional systems of medicine, particularly Asian traditions, use many herbs in synergistic mixtures or blends. Examples are Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic, and Tibetan. They are not covered in the following listings. Note our Resource Guides on Ayurvedic, Tibetan medicine, and Traditional Systems of Medicine.

We are just beginning to understand the complexities of herbal medicine, with its multiplicity of active chemicals in a single herb, and the interaction of a mixture of herbs found in traditional therapies. Previously, scientific research relied on the drug development model, which focused on a single compound and mode of action. (more…)

Naturalbloom

The alternative medicine sector is not fully regulated in most parts of the world. For almost all complementary therapies there are several organisations in each country which each allowing practitioners to register with them. There is a move, in the UK at least, to bring all of the therapies under one governing professional body making regulation easier.

Alternative medicine associations and professional bodies can offer general information on the therapy they specialise in, as well as a list of practitioners who are members of that body. For those interested in training to become a practitioner, the associations can also provide lists of affiliated training schools and career information.

The European Traditional Chinese Medicine Association (ETCMA)

The European Traditional Chinese Medicine Association (ETCMA) is an umbrella organisation for professional associations that represent different fields within traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

Each member association is made up of individual practitioners, and by January 2009 we represent approximately 9000 practitioners in 12 countries. We have been meeting regularly since 2001 and we continue to welcome new members.

What we do

Our main purpose is to promote the wider recognition and acceptance of TCM therapies by European governments and the public. We exchange views and experiences over matters of mutual interest, such as the statutory regulation of our therapies and the development of our educational programmes.

We are a reference point for consultation regarding any healthcare policy and regulation in Europe that may impact on our professions and our patients, and we offer particular expertise in all fields of TCM.

Our aims and objectives

· To exchange information

The ETCMA collectively holds a wealth of experience, which can be shared for the benefit of every member. We regularly inform each other of the latest political developments affecting TCM therapies in our respective countries and give each other updates on educational developments etc.

· To develop and promote high standards of education

The ETCMA works towards developing accreditation systems for TCM education programmes within Europe. We seek to establish minimum criteria for proficient professional practice, and also to define criteria for the practice of different TCM therapies. We would like to strengthen international academic exchanges and to assist in the development of academic collaboration with European colleges and universities. (more…)

The British Herbal Medicine Association (BHMA)

The British Herbal Medicine Association (BHMA) was founded in 1964 to advance the science and practice of herbal medicine in the United Kingdom and to ensure its continued statutory recognition at a time when all medicines were becoming subject to greater regulatory control. It is worth noting that the BHMA was established on the principle that herbal remedies are medicines under UK law, and should be produced to medicine requirements for quality, safety and efficacy, rather than to lesser requirements for “dietary supplements” or healthfoods.

Following the Medicines Act 1968 the legislative requirements for herbal medicines increased substantially. During the 1980s, as part of the EC Review of Medicines, all UK medicine manufacturers were required to complete a thorough technical appraisal of their products and to provide evidence on quality, safety and efficacy to the Medicines Control Agency on behalf of the Department of Health. Around 600 herbal products emerged from this rigorous review with full medicine product licences and with their claims for efficacy accepted by the government. (They can be identified on the product pack by a “PL” number). (more…)

European Herbal & Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association

The EHTPA was founded in 1993 when it became clear that with the development of the European Union, the legislative framework under which herbal medicine was practised in the UK and Europe was likely to undergo radical change. The main professional herbal practitioner associations in the UK affiliated with Irish and Danish herbal associations to form the European Herbal & Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (EHTPA).

In late 1994, the basis of herbal practice in the UK was threatened by the sudden announcement by the Medicines Control Agency (now the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency – MHRA) that existing European medicines legislation had swept away all those statutes in the Medicines Act 1968 that gave British herbal practitioners their legal right to obtain herbal medicines. ATMS was founded in 1984 and is an incorporated not-for-profit company with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ABN 46 002 844 233). As at November 2010, ATMS had 11,757 financial members. ATMS is the only natural medicine practitioner association appointed to two Commonwealth statutory committees, where it represents the interests of the entire natural medicine practitioner profession. Traditional Knowledge Digital Library

Introduction
Since time immemorial, India has possessed a rich traditional knowledge of ways and means practiced to treat diseases afflicting people. This knowledge has generally been passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation. A part of this knowledge has been described in ancient classical and other literature, often inaccessible to the common man and even when accessible rarely understood. Documentation of this existing knowledge, available in public domain, on various traditional systems of medicine has become imperative to safeguard the sovereignty of this traditional knowledge and to protect it from being misappropriated in the form of patents on non-original innovations, and which has been a matter of national concern. India fought successfully for the revocation of turmeric and basmati patents granted by United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and neem patent granted by European Patent Office (EPO). As a sequel to this, in 1999, the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy-(AYUSH), erstwhile Department of Indian System of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H) constituted an inter-disciplinary Task Force, for creating an approach paper on establishing a Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL).The project TKDL was initiated in the year 2001.
