Dictionary of Alkaloids, 2nd Edition

By: John Buckingham, Keith H. Baggaley, Andrew D. Roberts, Laszlo F. Szabo

Book Description:

While some of the most commonly investigated — and most notorious — chemicals in the world are alkaloids, many modern medicines are also based on alkaloid structures. Chemists continue to explore new synthetic routes and alkaloid derivatives in search of drug candidates for fighting disease.

Drawn from the venerable Dictionary of Natural Products, the second edition of the Dictionary of Alkaloids categorizes all known alkaloids, presenting concise chemical, structural, and physical data. The addition of an authoritative foreword, written by Geoffrey Cordell, eminent alkaloid chemist and Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious series The Alkaloids, Chemistry and Biology, sets the scene for this fascinating subject.

The Alkaloids Chemistry and Pharmacology, Volume 04

By : R.H.F Manske, H.L. Holmes

Once I had this book borrowed from a local library. It is an extensive alphabetical list of alkaloids containing a brief chemical, physical and pharmaceutical info under each alkaloid name. (Eg. melting points of the substance and its salts, solubilities, crystallisation, angles of rotation of polarised light, effects on ingestion, occurence in nature, etc.). Anyone with an interest in plant substances will find it interesting. The copy I have seen was printed in 1947 in New York, so today it may be a little out of date.

Book Description:

Volume 14 of this series presents three interesting reviews of research on alkaloids. Chapter 1, by Paul L. Schiff, Jr., is a monumental effort, presenting a selective, comprehensive tabular review of research on the bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, with an analysis of the respective alkaloid types. The chapter should serve as a very useful tool for the bench research scientist who is involved in the isolation and elucidation of structures of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. Moreover, the data in these tables provides the botanical distribution and occurrence (family, genus, species) of the various classes of these alkaloids. The alkaloids are also categorized by their molecular weights and structural types.

Oxidants in Biology: a question of balance

By : Giuseppe Valacchi, Paul Davis

Book Description

Oxidants, like other aspects of life, involves tradeoffs. Oxidants, whether intentionally produced or by-products of normal metabolism can either mediate a variety of critical biological processes but when present inappropriately cause extensive damage to biological molecules ( DNA, proteins, and lipids). These effects can lead to either damage that is a major contributor to aging and degenerative diseases (or to other diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune-system decline, brain dysfunction, and cataracts) or normal physiological function- tissue repair, defense against pathogens and cellular proliferation. On the other hand the body is equipped with a complex antioxidant/oxidant handling system which includes both enzymatic and nonenzymatic (i.e. small molecules such as flavonoids, ascorbate, tocopherol, and carotenoids) produced endogenously or derived from the diet. This book focuses on how the same molecules can have favorable or noxious effects depending on location, level and timing.

Understanding the Antioxidant Controversy: Scrutinizing the Fountain of Youth (The Praeger Series on Contemporary Health and Living)

By : Paul E. Milbury, Alice C. Richer

Current scientific evidence suggests that free radicals— unstable by-products produced by normal human metabolic processes—damage the body, resulting in chronic health disorders and degenerative changes associated with aging. Nutritional products on the market today promise antioxidants can reduce—possibly even reverse—damage caused by these free radicals. If true, that would mean less chronic disease and premature aging, at the very least. But are antioxidants indeed the new Fountain of Youth? Media reports extol antioxidants as the solution to disease and aging, and some studies do seem to back up those reports. Yet the studies that have been completed are far from conclusive, and taking antioxidant supplements can be dangerous. This book explores current thinking, analyzes studies, and answers the questions: What are antioxidants? What do they do? Is there any real benefit to taking them as supplements? Are there real dangers for me?Media report preliminary and conflicting scientific studies on antioxidants, notwithstanding the fact that the final analysis about their effectiveness and safety is incomplete. The result is increasing sales of dietary supplements and so-called functional foods or nutraceuticals that are not regulated, nor proven, and a possible public safety crisis from hypersupplementation. Milbury and Richer bring us up to date, sharing nuances and emerging news regarding antioxidants—and their dangers. Understanding the Antioxidant Controversy is an educated consumers’ and health professionals’ guide to this controversial topic.

Department Chair

Welcome to the Department of Pharmacognosy at the University of Mississippi. Pharmacognosy as a constituent scientific discipline has for nearly 200 years referred to studies of “natural product drugs”. During the second half of the 20th century, Pharmacognosy evolved from being a descriptive botanical subject to one exhibiting a more chemical and biological focus. The advent of the 21st century has given new relevance to Pharmacognosy teaching in academic pharmacy institutions, as a result of the explosive growth in both the use of herbal remedies (phytomedicines) and the discovery of bioactive products from marine resources. Pharmacognosy research areas are continually expanding, and currently include aspect of cell and molecular biology in relation to natural products, ethnobotany and phytotherapy, in addition to the more traditional analytical method development and phytochemistry.

Traditional Medicine: A Global Perspective

By Steven B., Ph.D. Kayne

Book Description:

This is a contributed text on traditional medicines throughout the world. Almost 20 years ago the World Health Organization estimated that ‘In many countries, 80 per cent or more of the population living in rural areas are cared for by traditional practitioners and birth attendants’. It has since revised its view, adopting a rather safer position, now stating: ‘most of the population of most developing countries regularly use traditional medicine’. Whereas most people use traditional medicine in developing countries, only a minority have regular access to reliable modern medical services. Countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America use traditional medicine (TM) to help meet some of their primary health care needs. In Africa, up to 80 per cent of the population uses traditional medicine for primary health care. In industrialized countries, adaptations of traditional medicine are termed ‘Complementary’ or ‘Alternative’ (CAM). Over one-third of the population in developing countries lack access to essential medicines. The provision of safe and effective traditional medicine therapies could become a critical tool to increase access to health care.
